The name Sindiswa means `saved` The Xhosa tribe are from the Eastern Cape region and are the second largest tribe in South Africa. The legendary Nelson Mandela is a member of the Xhosa tribe. Older Xhosa women are often seen smoking long elegant pipes that are beautifully decorated with beads. Traditionally they were only allowed to smoke a pipe after giving birth to a certain number of children. The pipe and tobacco are carried in a decorative bag.
